Hubble Finds Double Einstein Ring

Hubble finds double Einstein ring
"News Release - heic0803: Hubble finds double Einstein ring
10-Jan-2008: The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has revealed a never-before-seen optical alignment in space: a pair of glowing rings, one nestled inside the other like a bull's-eye pattern. The double-ring pattern is caused by the complex bending of light from two distant galaxies strung directly behind a foreground massive galaxy, like three beads on a string."
http://www.spacetelescope.org/news/html/heic0803.html

Such stunning cosmic coincidences reveal so much about nature. Dark matter is not hidden to lensing,”
“The elegance of this lens is trumped only by the secrets of nature that it reveals.”
The massive foreground galaxy is almost perfectly aligned in the sky with two background galaxies at different distances.
The foreground galaxy is 3 billion light-years away.
The inner ring and outer ring are comprised of multiple images of two galaxies at a distance of 6 billion and approximately 11 billion light-years.
"This is an image of gravitational lens system SDSSJ0946+1006 as photographed by Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys. Astronomers Measure Largest Black Hole As 18 Billion Times Bigger Than Sun | January 11, 2008 | AHN
"quasar known as OJ287 on Wednesday at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Austin, Texas.
The quasar, 3.5 billion light-years from Earth in the constellation Cancer.
In 1994, astronomers using the Hubble space telescope found a black hole three billion times bigger than the sun in the galaxy named M87 located 50 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Virgo.
According to Valtonen's team, which included astronomers from other countries, OJ287 contains another small black hole that allowed them to measure the larger one.
The smaller black hole weighs about 100 million Suns and orbits the larger one on an oval-shaped path every 12 years. By analyzing the orbit of the smaller hole and the outbursts of light that occur when it comes closer to the disc of matter surrounding the larger black hole, the astronomers determined the size of the latter. The Violent Lives of Galaxies: Caught in the Cosmic Dark Matter Web (01/10/2008) - HubbleSite - NewsCenter -
""Thanks to Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys, we are detecting for the first time the irregular clumps of dark matter in this supercluster," Heymans said. "We can even see an extension of the dark matter toward a very hot group of galaxies that are emitting X-rays as they fall into the densest cluster core."
The dark matter map was constructed by measuring the distorted shapes of over 60,000 faraway galaxies. To reach Earth, the galaxies' light traveled through the dark matter that surrounds the supercluster galaxies and was bent by the massive gravitational field. Heymans used the observed, subtle distortion of the galaxies' shapes to reconstruct the dark matter distribution in the supercluster using a method called weak gravitational lensing. The dark matter map is 2.5 times sharper than a previous ground-based survey of the supercluster."

Guiana's 1st launch of Russian Soyuz rocket delayed_English_Xinhua
" BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- The inaugural launch from Europe's Guiana Space Center of a Russian Soyuz rocket is likely to be delayed until mid-2009 following delays in production of a specially designed mobile gantry being built in Russia, according to government and industry officials.
Unlike almost every other aspect of the Soyuz launch installation, the mobile gantry is not a copy of the Soyuz launch installations long in use at Russia's Plesetsk and Baikonur cosmodromes.
For Europe's Soyuz operations, the satellite payload will be placed upright onto the vehicle rather than integrated horizontally as is the common Russian practice."

NASA jargon, temp-stow -- temporarily stow it
"so that the station arm can grab Columbus. Again, that’s the whole structural interface between the station’s robotic arm and 30,000 pounds, and

€1 billion worth, of ESA’s hardware

, so they have to make sure that’s on there really good."

"We will go to the new nitrogen tank waiting in the payload bay, break torque on its bolts, unbolt it, and Rex will pick it up on the arm. We will fly him up to the P1 Truss where they will put it, what we call in NASA jargon,

temp-stow

-- temporarily stow it, stick it somewhere because we have to let go of it for a minute -- stick it onto the truss, go over to the old tank, finish unbolting it, pull it ou"
