英Ancestry.co.ukは7月25日、囚人としてオーストラリアへ島流しにされた人々の記録「Convict Transportation Registers: 1788-1868」を、オンラインで公開すると発表した。同記録には18世紀、19世紀に囚人としてオーストラリアへ送られた16万3021人のうち、大半の人々の氏名などが記載されている
英国政府が流刑囚植民地として初めてオーストラリアに入植したのは1788年とされる
流刑がピークに達した1833年には、36隻もの船が7000人を植民地へ運んだ。英国からオーストラリアへの船旅は、食料や燃料補給のための入港期間2カ月を含み8カ月間かかったとされる。
囚人の83％は15歳から30歳の男性で、75％は単純労働従事者だった。ただし殺人などの重罪を犯した者は2％とごくわずかで、大半の人々が犯した罪は軽いものだったという。"
