ESA aims for 22 February maiden flight?

Guiana's 1st launch of Russian Soyuz rocket delayed_English_Xinhua
"Most commercial satellites launched here are U.S.-built or have U.S.-made parts. As a result, security requirements insisted on by, among others, the U.S. government, made it necessary to separate the Russian teams and the Soyuz operation from the rest of the Guiana launch base."

French Guiana cannot launch latest Soyuz
"European launch provider Arianespace is only able to offer the Samara Space Center-built Soyuz 2-1a rocket for launches from French Guiana and not the more powerful 2-1b version owing to launch complex infrastructure issues.
From the new 400 million Euro ($553.4 million) European Space Agency/CNES Soyuz launch complex near the town of Sinnamary in French Guiana the 2-1a can put 2,700kg (5,940lb) into geostationary transfer orbit and the 2-1b, 3,600kg."
http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2007/09/18/216795/french-guiana-cannot-launch-latest-soyuz.html

"Following a successful pouring of concrete at the Soyuz complex under construction in French Guiana's Sinnamary municipality at the end of last year, the first ship carrying Russian launch pad hardware will arrive in March. Although the goal has been an April 2009 Soyuz first flight, it is expected to slip by a few weeks into June.
"Working together [with the Russians on site] will be a challenge. I would not be surprised if the launch is a few weeks late," says ESA's head of the launchers directorate Antonio Fabrizi. However even once completed the Sinnamary launch complex cannot launch the latest Soyuz version, the 2-1b. Fabrizi adds that the agency now expects its Vega booster's first flight to occur in early 2009 rather than the end of 2008."

ESA aims for 22 February maiden flight for its space station cargo ship
The target launch date for the European Space Agency's cargo ship, the 20,500kg (45,100lb) Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) is 22 February, while the first flight of the Samara Space Center Soyuz 2-1a from the agency's French Guiana spaceport could slip from April to June 2009."

'Jules Verne' fuelled for launch
Meanwhile, the US space agency (Nasa) continues to grapple with the fuel sensor glitch which has held the Atlantis orbiter on the ground since 6 December. The ATV cannot arrive at the ISS until the shuttle has been through to the platform to deliver Europe's Columbus science laboratory.
There are two 5-6-day docking windows in March when sunlight conditions are at their optimum; a third one exists in early April as well.

"History

Before the late 1970s, only four galaxies had been detected emitting X-rays: the Milky Way, M31, and the Magellanic Clouds.

Building on earlier work in the field, ESA’s X-ray observatory, Exosat, was launched in May 1983. It was active until April 1986, by which time it had made 1780 X-ray observations."

ESA - Space Science - XMM-Newton overview

ESA - Space Science - XMM-Newton overview
