外交筋によれば、常岡さんは現在、首都カブールの日本大使館で保護。
クンドゥズ州のタリバンの司令官は4月上旬、常岡さんを同州チャルダラ地区で拘束したことを確認。収監中の仲間2人の釈放を求めてアフガン当局と交渉を始めたと語っていた。同国を訪問した衆院議員団は8月3日、「かなり突っ込んだ交渉に入っているようだ」と述べていた。
