訃報 Bill Gordon - Telegraph
Bill Gordon, who has died aged 92, designed and built one of the world's most spectacular radio telescopes which, from the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, located the first planets beyond the solar system and lakes on one of Saturn's moons.
He designed the massive Arecibo telescope – a 1,000ft-wide dish set in a sinkhole surrounded by forested hills – in the 1950s.
The American astronomers Joseph Taylor and Russell Hulse discovered the first binary pulsar at Arecibo in 1974, leading to a 1993 Nobel Prize in physics.
