Boomerang

"BOOMERANG has flown around Antarctica in two separate flights (the first in 1998, the second in 2003) to map the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB)."
http://cmb.phys.cwru.edu/boomerang/
"The structures in these images predate the first star or galaxy in the universe," said U.S. team leader Andrew Lange of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena.
"It is an incredible triumph of modern cosmology to have predicted their basic form so accurately."

Andrew Lange, noted universe researcher at Caltech, dies -
"His primary research focus was on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), a gas of thermal radiation left over from the Big Bang, that filled the entire universe. Caltech officials said he is perhaps best known for co-leading the BOOMERanG experiment, the first to determine that the spatial geometry of the universe is flat. " Pasadena Star-News

"It was not until 1992 that the first hints of the patterns imprinted in the radiation by structure in the early universe were detected by the Cosmic Background Explorer satellite.
In 2000, using new detectors developed at JPL and Caltech, the Boomerang experiment, led by Caltech physicist Dr. Andrew Lange, produced the first resolved images of these patterns. "

Russia is still potent in some areas of physics. Its strongest area is nuclear science, with Russian researchers publishing 3100 papers in the field between 2004 and 2008 – about 10.3% of the world’s output."

Net widens for funding of arXiv - physicsworld.com
"arXiv has become the most widely used preprint server among academics in the physical sciences. It received more than 60,000 new submissions in 2009, has about 400,000 registered users and provides 2.5 million article downloads per month.
Its rate of expansion is so rapid that staff expect its budget – which covers personnel as well as operating expenses – to increase from $400,000 in 2010 to $500,000 in 2012"

Caltech Faces Another Suicide
A leading figure in physics, Andrew Lange of the California Institute of Technology, killed himself last week, leaving many of his colleagues deeply saddened and confused. Last year, Lange won the prestigious Dan David Prize, worth $1 million, in astrophysics. While unrelated to Lange's death, concerns about suicide have been prominent at Caltech of late because of three student suicides in the last year. "

Lecture by Andrew Lange: How Did the Universe Begin? Nov.2009

Chas A. Egan, Charles H. Lineweaver. A Larger Estimate of the Entropy of the Universe. Astrophysical Journal, 2010; (in press)
[0909.3983v2] A Larger Estimate of the Entropy of the Universe
"Using recent measurements of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass function, we find that SMBHs are the largest contributor to the entropy of the observable universe, contributing at least an order of magnitude more entropy than previously estimated. "
http://arxiv.org/abs/0909.3983v2
Their research paper "A Larger Estimate of the Entropy of the Universe" has just been accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal.
"Using new data on the number and size of black holes they found that the universe contains 30 times more entropy than earlier estimates.we found that the entropy of the observable universe is about 30 times larger than previous calculations"
